Storia dell’Australia is a history of Australia in Italian wriiten by Luciano Bini. Such a history has never before been written in Australia, a country where Italian is the second spoken language after, of course, English. There are approximately 350,000 students of Italian in primary and secondary schools in Australia and the last census gives the number of Italian speakers in Australia at some 400,000.
“I have tried to write the book in an easy and very readable language giving emphasis to the unique characteristics of our country, our people and our very strong democratic system. It begins with the dreamtime of our Aborigines until the present days, including the very ‘Australian’ tragedy of Bali on 12 October 2002.” Says Mr Bini.
The last fifty years touch particularly on the many new developments and the slow progression of white Australia in recognizing, appreciating and hopefully reconciling with the Aborigines.
The acceptance of multiculturalism is also marked out as new achievement not only for the new comers to Australia, but for all Australians, whether indigenous or descended from original Anglo-Celtic settlers. Australian institutions have reached a general recognition of all our components.
The Melbourne book launch of Storia dell’Australia took place on November 29th 2007 at ‘Cremlana’ the Myer family residence. It was officially launched by our Premier the Hon. John Brumby and hosted by Lady Southey AC.
